Our Mission
Acorn promotes and sells products that encourage children and adults to learn more about the natural world, enjoy it, and therefore take care of it while taking care of themselves.
When I was teaching, I had a banner on the front door of my classroom that read:
We will conserve only what we love.
We will love only what we understand.
We will understand only what we are taught.
– Baba Dioum of Senegal
This has always been an important mantra for me as a teacher. By opening Acorn, I hope to continue to provide environmental awareness to people in my community as well as encourage families to live naturally. Choosing a lifestyle that has low impact on the earth is good for our bodies and for our environment.
Acorn offers only products that are manufactured by socially and ecologically responsible companies, contain only natural and organic ingredients that are sustainably grown, contain no animal products nor are tested on animals, and encourage a connection with our natural world.
Love Nature, Live Naturally!
About the Founder
Acorn represents a new era in Amy Biasucci’s life. Inspired by her daughter, Ayla Soleil who was born on October 1, 2005, Amy has combined all things sacred to her to create her own business while caring full time for Ayla. Before Ayla arrived, Amy taught Environmental Science, Marine Science, and Biology at Cranford High School. Teaching was (and still is) a passion for Amy and she enjoyed state and national recognition for her work. Being able to inspire a love for and understanding of the natural world in students was essential in her teaching philosophy. Her schooling in Natural Resources Management and teaching career led her deep in the field to study wildlife in Alaska, Newfoundland, Costa Rica, Brazil, and many other places including, of course, New Jersey!
Ayla’s arrival swept Amy and her husband, Michael Novemsky, off their feet! Plans for Amy to return to work were dismissed in favor of savoring every moment with “our little spawn.” The parenting experience brought a whole new awareness of family, opportunity, community, and natural living. Amy soon discovered there were terms for how she and Michael were raising their baby, called Natural and Attachment Parenting! (Who knew?)
The next step, naturally, was to fill an empty niche in the Maplewood community by providing products and services for natural family living. Acorn, named for Ayla which means “strong as an Oak”, was born. Amy wants to continue to educate people about environment and how consumer choices play an important role in its protection. She is also striving to provide parents with knowledge of natural parenting techniques that help enforce a strong bond between people with each other and with the natural world.
